Sunset Over Brookline and Boston

This large-format photograph was recorded using a film camera by School of Visual Arts MFA graduate Jung Gao. He placed a nearly opaque neutral density filter over the lens and exposed the film contunuously for 21 days in April of 2007 from a perch in the West End Lounge.

The image captures daily sweeps of the sun – and its occasional absence when obscured by unseen clouds – in a way that is both engaging and unsettling. The Massachusetts Turnpike, undoubtedly crowded both day and night with springtime traffic, lies eerily vacant.
